General Safety Overview

We ask that coaches take responsibility for ensuring that every element of a dance routine is safe to perform. When evaluating the safety of a routine, coaches should consider both the complexity of the skills and the skill level of the dancers involved. Prior to any competition, all routines should be assessed by the coach for safety, including any movements not specifically outlined here.

Competition Routine Guidelines

1. Substitutions for Injury: In the event of injury, teams may substitute participants. Substitute dancers must be listed on the team’s official participant roster upon registration.

2. Floor Markings: Any equipment that could damage the performance floor, including floor markers (such as tape, rope, or cones), is prohibited. Floor markers are only allowed at regional competitions, provided they don’t attach to the floor and don’t delay performance times.

3. Routine Length: Solos are limited to 2 minutes and Team routines are limited to 3 minutes; Any routine exceeding the time specified time limits is subject to a penalty on the day of competition.

4. Music and Setup: A team representative must be present to assist with the start and finish of the music. All teams are required to upload their music to the registration software at least two weeks prior to competition. All teams must also provide backup copies of their music onto a USB Drive as a backup in the event of any technical issues.

Jewelry

Jewelry is allowed as long as it does not pose a safety risk to the performers.

Props

Props are permitted in any dance category, as long as they meet the following criteria:

1. Wearable, Handheld, or Freestanding: Props must be able to be worn, held, or positioned without posing a safety risk.

2. No Hazardous Materials: The use of dry ice, confetti, glass, water, or any flammable or potentially dangerous material is prohibited.

3. No LARGE Backdrops: All props must be manageable by dancers and cannot obstruct the view or cause damage to people or property, including
lighting or the performance floor.

4. Pom Usage: Poms are restricted to ONLY the Pom category, or the Open Division with the proper entry requirements. No prop may be tossed off the floor or used in a way that could cause injury or damage.

If you have questions about a specific prop, please send us a photo before the competition for approval.
